Press Release: House of Lords Economic Affairs Committee report on fracking shows they doesn’t understand Climate Change

Ex-chancellor-Nigel-Lawso-001The House of Lords Economic Affairs report which endorsed fracking in the UK was noticeably light on the science of Climate Change. With one exception (Lord May of Oxford) the committee have a background in economics and banking and clearly have a poor grasp of Climate Change, which Lord Stern referred to as “a result of the greatest market failure the world has seen.”

The committee also includes Lord Lawson of Blaby who is the Chair of the Trustees of the Global Warming Policy Foundation, a group that has a history of misrepresenting climate science and which is may have as few as 80 supporters (less than Frack Free Glossop).

The committee also appear to have completely ignored the contribution of Dr David Smythe, a retired geologist who pointed out that the more complicated geology of Britain suggested fracking would be much more difficult than in the United States (1)

Martin Porter of Frack Free Greater Manchester said “This report is disappointing, but not surprising given the links to the oil and gas industry which go to the heart of government.

One thing we can agree on though is that there is no fracking in the UK and not likely to be any for several years. However how this means that fracked gas can be used as a bridge fuel whilst we develop cleaner energy is a mystery. Renewable energy is here, it makes up 12% of our energy supply and this figure is rising despite a hostile government. Fracked gas meanwhile does not exist in this country, and may not be ready for the best part of a decade.”
