Dear Sir/Madam

I am writing to object to the Mining Waste Permit for the proposed works by IGas at the Barton Moss site, Irlam.

Exploratory drilling carries the potential for NORM and other radioactive wastes to be generated. Yet I note that there is no radioactive waste permit for the works.

No Environmental Impact Assessment has been carried out. I am greatly concerned that the impact of leakage of any waste chemicals upon groundwaters has not been addressed adequately. Evidence of existing operations around the world has shown that it is impossible to contain all risks. Biocides, carcinogens and toxic waters, which are pumped in are an unacceptable measure and ought not to be used at all.

The accidental release of chemicals to surface and groundwaters, well failures and subsequent migrations into groundwater/local aquifiers, waste transportation hazards, and storage of wastes, are all risks which make this process unfeasible to manage completely. Failures are unacceptable. The huge volumes of wastes including produced waters, are unquantified, unspecified, and unregulated in their removal. This exploratory drilling operation cannot be reconciled as being of benefit to human health and in safeguarding our environment.

I urge you to act in the interests of public and environmental health and apply the Precautionary Principle to these works and reject the application for a Mining Waste Permit.

Please acknowledge receipt of this objection.
