Demonstration Planned as Salford City Council Debates Fracking. 9:15AM Tuesday 8 April.

800px-Swinton_Town_HallFrack Free Greater Manchetser and the Protectors of Barton Moss will be holding a demonstration outside the Civil Centre, Swinton, M27 5FJ as Salford City Council debates fracking.

The council has been forced to debate the issue by the collection of over 3000 signatures in a petition.

With test drilling at Barton Moss site at an end and Igas removing equipment from the site, and other camps being set up to oppose fracking operation in other parts of the country, this may be the last time that the Protectors are together and will mark the end of this phase of the campaign.

During the course of the campaign public opinion on fracking in Greater Manchester has gone from 43% in favour (1) to 73% against (2) and the Igas share price has collapsed, wiping £80 million off the value of the company (3)

Sasha Conway, one of the Protectors who camped through the winter at Barton Moss said “This has been a long and hard first part of this campaign. If Igas return, we will be back here.”

Martin Porter of Frack Free Greater Manchester said “Fracking has been missing from the political debate. Most people in Manchester now oppose this unwanted, unnecessary and unsafe fossil fuel, yet the only way they have been able to have their say is by standing in front of the lorries at Barton Moss.”

Note: The Cabinet meeting starts at 10AM and the petition is the fourth item on the agenda. This part of the meeting is open to the public.(4)
