Public meeting: Climate change, divestment and the fight against fracking
October 16, 2018 @ 19:00 - 21:00
It’s not just the UK that has been sweltering this summer: high temperatures and extreme weather around the world show that our climate has changed. The impacts have been deadly. Saddleworth Moor burned for 3 weeks but wildfires have raged in Japan, Greece, Toronto and even in the Arctic Circle where ice volume has been decreasing with record temperatures. Droughts are widespread in southern and eastern Africa and farmers in Europe have been struggling.
At the Paris climate conference (COP21) in December 2015, 195 countries adopted the first-ever universal, legally binding global climate deal. The agreement sets out a global action plan to put the world on track to avoid dangerous climate change by limiting global warming to well below 2°C. Some progress has been made but not enough. Investment in fossil fuels continues and Banks and Pension funds continue to profit from industries that threaten our very survival. Incredibly our Government is pressing on with its plans to impose Fracking on communities across the country.
We cannot avoid the question. Are we doing enough to combat climate change and what more can we do?
At this meeting we have some amazing speakers:
= Clara Paillard, President of PCS Union Culture Group and climate change activist
– Tina Rothery, Lancashire Nana and a leading campaigner against fracking, will report from the front line of the fight against Fracking at Preston New Rd, Lancashire.
– Maggie Walker from Fossil Free Manchester will speak about the need for Divestment from Fossil Fuels.
– Additional speaker(s) may be announced.
This is a joint meeting organised by Frack Free GM, Manchester Campaign against Climate Change and Fossil Free GM.
