As the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s latest report (1) calls for rapid action to avoid dangerous Climate Change, Frack Free Greater Manchester warned that fracking is the roadblock to progress on genuinely low-carbon energy.
The government is currently supporting fracking, which is a high-carbon fuel and is unlikely to be produced in significant quantities for at least ten years. This is not compatible with government commitments to keep Climate Change to within 2 degrees by 2100 (2).
Martin Porter of Frack Free Greater Manchester said “We need clean energy now. The climate cannot wait for us to ride out twenty years of fracking boom-and-bust first. If you want to stop dangerous Climate Change, then the best thing you can do right now is oppose fracking.”
